With support from the Solomon Foundation, the Mystic River Watershed Association, in partnership with the City of Somerville and Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is leading a comprehensive, community-driven plan and design for Blessing of the Bay Park. With the input of local residents and stakeholders including Groundwork Somerville and Mystic Housing, the revitalization plan has identified the physical features, natural areas, paths, and traffic calming, as well as programming and amenities needed to transform this park into one that supports recreation, active transportation, social cohesion, and ecological health.
Background: Named for the ship commissioned by Governor Winthrop in the 1600’s, Blessing of the Bay Park and Boathouse is one of the few waterfront parks in Somerville and the location of the Mystic River Watershed Association’s annual Herring Run and Paddle Race. It’s also Paddle Boston’s newest kayak and canoe rental site, and the only public boat rental on the Mystic River.
